Adoptions have slowed, donations have almost stopped, but the beagles keep coming.

This is life in rescue. You don't get in it for the money (there is none) or the glamour (not so much of that) or power (ha!). You get into it because you've got the gene for it. There's no other explanation I can think of that keeps us doing this in spite of the huge struggle it is.

The recession has affected even the beagles at the most rural county shelters. It certainly has affected all rescue organizations and has impacted the way we run our programs. Intake requests are through the roof and there's just not enough room for them all.

Foster homes that can make a 1-2 month commitment help immensely. We have a wonderful little guy, heartworm negative and a shelter favorite, that will have to be euthanized for space if we can't find a spot for him.

We are also encouraging pair adoptions. There is an adoption donation discount, and the benefits are great. Dogs that have either come to us together or who have bonded with each other in foster care frequently have a much easier transition to a new home than a single. Lucy and Raleigh, Olivia and Sherman - these are great pairs. We have a Seniors for Seniors program as well; if you are over 60 and are adopting one of our fantastic senior dogs there is an adoption donation discount.

Stay tuned to the website as we are adding more ways you can help promote fostering and adoptions.

We can't get through this tough time without you!
